Convert MBOX to EML

Convert an MBOX mailbox to EML files: one .eml file per email, with the attachments kept inside each one, downloaded together as a ZIP.

How to use it

  1. Choose your .mbox file. Every email in it is selected.
  2. Untick any emails you don't need, or search to narrow the list.
  3. Press “Download as .eml” and unzip the file you get.

Why split an MBOX file into EML files?

An .mbox file holds a whole folder of mail, and few programs open it. A single .eml file opens with a double-click in Outlook, Apple Mail and Thunderbird, can be attached to a ticket or another email, and can be filed next to the documents it belongs to.

It's also a way into Outlook, which can't import MBOX but opens .eml files.

What you get

A ZIP with one .eml file per email, named by date and subject, such as “2024-03-05 Invoice March.eml”, so the files sort in the order they were sent. Emails with the same name get a number.

Each message is copied byte for byte, with its headers, formatting and attachments, so nothing is re-encoded or lost.

FAQ

How large a mailbox can it split?

In Chrome and Edge, a 3 GB mailbox with 20,000 emails splits into a single ZIP. Safari manages about 2 GB per ZIP; for a bigger mailbox, search for a sender or subject and split it in parts.

Is my mailbox uploaded?

No. The ZIP is built in your browser and the mailbox never leaves your device.

Can I get Outlook .msg files instead?

Yes. The MBOX converter offers MSG next to EML, PDF and CSV.
