Open an EMLX file online
This EMLX reader opens the files Apple Mail keeps for each email, with formatting, images and attachments. It works on Windows and Linux as well as on a Mac, without Apple Mail.
Runs in your browser. Your files never leave your device.
How to use it
- Choose an .emlx file or drag it onto the box. You can pick several at once.
- Read the email with its sender, recipients, date and attachments.
- Press “Save as PDF” or “Save as .eml”. With several files, choose EML for a ZIP of .eml files or PDF for one document.
What is an .emlx file?
Apple Mail on a Mac stores every email as its own file, named with a number such as 4217.emlx. Inside is an ordinary email, the same text an .eml file holds, between a first line that gives its length in bytes and a block of Apple data at the end: whether it was read or flagged, and when it arrived.
That wrapper is why Windows and most mail apps other than Apple Mail don't recognise the file. The viewer reads past it, so the email opens on any computer.
Convert EMLX to EML or PDF
“Save as .eml” removes Apple's wrapper and keeps the email byte for byte as Apple Mail stored it, headers and attachments included. Any app that opens .eml files can then read it, and the other tools here can turn it into MSG or CSV. Select all the .emlx files in a folder to get them back as .eml files in one ZIP.
“Save as PDF” opens your browser's print dialog. With several files, they go into one PDF with each email starting on a new page.
Partial .emlx files and missing attachments
For emails with large attachments, Apple Mail may save the attachments as separate files and name the email something like 4217.partial.emlx. The viewer opens the email, but those attachments aren't inside it. They're in the Attachments folder next to the Messages folder, in a subfolder named after the email's number.
FAQ
How do I open an EMLX file on Windows?
Open this page in Edge, Chrome or Firefox and drop the file on the box. Windows has no app that reads .emlx, and nothing needs installing here.
Where does Apple Mail keep .emlx files?
In the Mail folder of your user Library. In Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder and type ~/Library/Mail. Each mailbox has a Messages folder of numbered .emlx files. To get emails out more simply, drag them from Apple Mail into a Finder folder, which saves them as .eml files.
Can I convert EMLX to EML in bulk?
Yes. Select all the .emlx files, untick any you don't need and press EML. You get one ZIP with an .eml file for each email, named by date and subject.
Is my email uploaded?
No. Your browser reads the .emlx file on your device, and it's never sent anywhere.
