EML Tools

Convert MBOX to CSV

Convert an MBOX file to CSV: the whole mailbox becomes one spreadsheet with a row per email.

Runs in your browser. Your files never leave your device.

How to use it

  1. Choose your .mbox file from Gmail Takeout, Thunderbird or Apple Mail.
  2. Untick any emails you don't need, or search to narrow the list.
  3. Press “Download as CSV” and open the file in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers.

What's in the CSV

One row per email with these columns: Date, From, To, Cc, Subject, Attachments (the file names) and Body. The body is the plain text of the email; emails sent only as HTML are converted to text first.

The file is UTF-8 with a byte order mark, so Excel shows accents and other alphabets correctly when you double-click it. Bodies are cut at 32,000 characters, just under the most Excel fits in one cell.

What people use it for

Pulling orders, sign-ups or form submissions out of a mailbox into a list. Building a contact list from everyone who wrote to you. Counting emails per sender or per month. Loading old support emails into a helpdesk or CRM that imports CSV.

FAQ

Why do some cells start with an apostrophe?

A cell that begins with =, +, - or @ would be run as a formula by Excel. Emails come from strangers, so those cells get a leading apostrophe to keep them as plain text.

Are attachments exported?

Their file names are, in the Attachments column. To get the files themselves, use MBOX to EML or open the email in the MBOX viewer.

Can I convert MSG to CSV?

Not on this page, which reads .mbox mailboxes. EML to CSV takes Outlook .msg files, alone or mixed with .eml files, and builds the same spreadsheet with one row per email.

Is my mailbox uploaded?

No. The CSV is built in your browser and the mailbox never leaves your device.
