EML Tools

Convert EML to CSV

Select all your .eml files at once and get a single spreadsheet with one row per email. Outlook .msg files can go in the same batch.

Runs in your browser. Your files never leave your device.

How to use it

  1. Choose your .eml files. In the file picker, Ctrl+A (Cmd+A on a Mac) selects every email in the folder.
  2. Untick any emails you want to leave out of the spreadsheet.
  3. Download the CSV and open it in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers.

Columns in the EML to CSV export

Each email becomes one row with seven columns: Date, From, To, Cc, Subject, Attachments and Body. Dates are written like 2024-10-01 09:30, so the sheet sorts by date correctly. Attachments lists the file names, separated by semicolons. Body holds the plain text of the email; for emails written only in HTML, the text is taken from the HTML.

The CSV is saved as UTF-8 with a byte order mark, which tells Excel to show accents, Greek, Chinese and other scripts correctly. A body longer than 32,000 characters is cut there, because Excel can't hold much more in one cell.

Getting .eml files out of your mail app

Thunderbird: select the emails, right-click, choose Save As and pick a folder; each email is saved as an .eml file. Apple Mail: drag the emails from the message list into a Finder folder. Gmail: open an email and choose Download message from the ⋮ menu.

Outlook for Windows saves dragged emails as .msg files instead. Those go into this converter too.

FAQ

Can I convert many EML files to one CSV?

Yes. Select or drop them all together and they go into one CSV, one row per email, oldest first. Untick any you don't need before downloading.

How do I convert EML to Excel?

Convert the emails to CSV here, then open the file in Excel, where it appears as a normal sheet. To keep it as a workbook, use File > Save As and choose .xlsx.

Can I convert Outlook .msg files to CSV?

Yes. Add .msg files on their own or mixed with .eml files, and each one becomes a row like any other email.

Why does a cell start with an apostrophe?

Spreadsheet apps treat a cell that starts with =, +, - or @ as a formula. Anyone can send you an email, so those cells get an apostrophe in front to keep them as plain text.

Are the attachments in the CSV?

Only their names, in the Attachments column. To save the files themselves, open the email in the EML viewer and download them from there.

Are my emails uploaded?

No. Your browser reads the .eml files and writes the CSV on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.
